Chapter 21 vocabulary

Dividend – a portion of a fund or an organization’s profits.Certificate of deposit – A type of investment in which a person deposits a specific amount of money for a fixed amount of time at a stated interest rate.
401K plan – a type of pension plan in which an employee contributes a specific portion of his or her salary to the plan each year.Individual retirement account -

Endorse – to sign one’s name on the back of a check before depositing or cashing it.
Check register – a small booklet that allows one to keep track of money in one’s checking account.

*Tax system should be fair; everyone should pay his or her fair share.
*Tax laws should be clear and simple.
*Taxes should be collected at a convenient time when most people are able to pay.
*A tax system should be stable.
*A tax system should be flexible
Not everyone agrees to the tax system, and having these would make people happier.
2. How does the amount of money you earn and the amount withheld determine weather you owe income tax?
*If your employer withheld more money from your paychecks than you owe, you’ll get a tax refund. If they didn’t withheld enough then you’ll have to pay the difference.

3. How will understanding such terms as exemption, dependent and deduction help you complete a tax return?
*That way you’ll know how to understand the tax forms.

Gross Domestic Product-(GDP) the main indicator of the economy.

Inflation- occurs when average prices of goods and services rise sharply.

Consumer Fraud- dishonest business practices used by people who try to trick or cheat you.

Bait and switch-retail advertises a bargain-the bait-to lure people into the store.

Warranty- a guarantee that a product meets certain standards of quality.
